Our History
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home was once home to the Hensley family who built the home in the early part of the 20th century. Mr. Hensley opened Cumberland Funeral Home in the downstairs area of the house, while he and his family resided upstairs. In the 1950s, new owner, Harold Ball, and wife, Virginia, changed the name to Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. They remained owners until the 1980s when Jimmy and Brenda Smith took ownership. In the late 1980s, young businessman, Dewayne Jackson, and wife, Darla, became the proud owners of Mount Pleasant. Dewayne devoted himself to Mount Pleasant until his untimely death in 2010. After Dewayne's death, Darla Saylor Jackson and son, Holden Jackson continued the Mount Pleasant legacy. They currently own and operate the funeral home.
Mount Pleasant is still at the historical 122 North Cumberland Ave. location in downtown Harlan, KY. While many updates and changes have occurred, Darla strives to keep the sprawling old home as original as possible.
