Ethel Nantz, age 92, of Somerset, KY formerly of Greasy Creek, KY passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland, Somerset, KY following a long illness. She was born May 8, 1921 in Hyden, KY to the late Chris and Emily Witt. She was a retired mother and housewife. She was a postmaster and a cook at the Mount Air Motel. She was a member of the Leslie County Homemakers and was a life-long member of the Church of Christ. She loved playing with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Ethel lived most of her life on Greasy Creek, quilting, gardening, canning, and freezing fruits and vegetables, milking cows, making butter and buttermilk. She was the doctor for the entire neighborhood as well as the barber. She lived her life serving the Lord and was baptized unto Christ at the early age of 17 and has been a member of Keavy Church of Christ for the past 2 years and a member of the Poor Fork Church of Christ 14 years and before that was a member of other Churches of Christ on Greasy Creek. She has given love to each and every one she has met in her life up to the end. Nurses and doctors that cared for her seemed to feel her love and enjoyed caring for her. Special thanks to the staff at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Hospice staff that went above and beyond with love and care.
Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ora Nantz; sons: Cova and Pearl Nantz; brothers: Otis, Orie, Fred, Willis, Lee, and Homer; sisters: Tanny, Claudine, Maggie, and Goldie.
She is survived by her children: Snowden (Pearl) Nantz of Houston, TX, Susie (Gene) Burton of Richmond, KY, Sarah (Jack) Spencer of Richmond, KY, Jerry (Patty) Nantz of Whitesburg, KY, Elsie (Harold) Lewis of Harlan, KY, Robert Nantz of Tazewell, TN, Mary (Andrew) Bedwell of Harlan, KY, Butch Nantz of Greasy Creek, KY and Linda (Ray) Hall of Somerset, KY; daughters-in-law: Zula of Florence, KY and Sandy of New Tazewell, TN; brother, Bill Witt of Dundee, FL, 26 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6 to 8PM at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Funeral will be Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 1PM in the chapel of Mount Pleasant with the Reverends Bill Browning and James Forester officiating. Burial will be at the Britton/Chappell Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
