Bobby was born in Harlan County at the Pine Mountain Settlement School hospital. He graduated from Redbird Mission in 1961 as the valedictorian of his class. He served in the Air Force from 1961-1964. Bobby then made a career as a surface miner.
He married Pauline Boggs, the woman he cherished for 58 years. Together, they raised their family in Big Laurel. Bobby loved the Lord, his family, and his community. He always said he loved where he was planted. Big Laurel is where he grew deep roots.
Bobby was the pastor of Big Laurel Baptist Church for 48 years. Until a hunting incident, he rang the church bells without missing a Sunday for 37 straight years. The last sermon he preached was on Philippians 1:21 “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
Bobby loved to garden and would provide for not only his family, but he delighted in sharing the Lord’s bounty with others. He loved fishing, and joined the Fishers of Men national tournament trail where he went to 2 national championships, multiple regional tournaments, and fished on lakes from Alabama to North Carolina.
His grandkids and great grandkids all knew him as “Grandpa.” He loved the time spent with each and every one of them, whether he was in the floor playing with them, taking them outside pushing them in his swing, or imparting wisdom about the things he loved.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Lucille Watson Boggs, sister Judy Steele, brother Louis Boggs Jr., daughter Rebecca Boggs, and grandson Joshua Milwee.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Boggs, brother Brent (Kay) Boggs, daughter Patty (Stephen) Howard, son Ben (Leah) Boggs, grandchildren Kacy (Kendra) Coldiron, Hayley (Mark) Harris, Emily (Joey) Clemons, great grandchildren Emmerich, Emilia, Ella, Adley, Aspynne, Walt, and Leo, his church family, and many special friends. Family will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 18, from 11AM to 2PM at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Funeral will follow immediately after at 2PM in the chapel of Mount Pleasant with Nathan Boggs and Donnie Browning officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery with Military Rites being performed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
Mount Pleasant is honored to serve the family of Bobby Boggs.
